Biography

Vikram M. Narayan, MD, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Urology at Emory University School of Medicine. Dr. Narayan serves as Director of Urological Oncology at Grady Memorial Hospital. His clinical expertise includes the management of complex urologic malignancies including open, laparoscopic, and robotic surgical approaches to prostate, bladder, and kidney cancers, as well as the surgical management of other urologic cancers including penile and testicular cancer. He has a clinical and research interest in the management of bladder and urothelial cancers. His practice locations include Emory University Hospital and Grady Memorial Hospital.

Dr. Narayan is a member of American Urological Association, Société Internationale d’Urologie, Society of Urologic Oncology, International Bladder Cancer Network, and American Association for Cancer Research.

Education

A native of California but raised in Florida, Dr. Narayan received his medical doctorate from the University of Florida College of Medicine in Gainesville, Florida where he graduated with Honors in Research. He completed his general surgery internship and urology residency at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and went on to complete subspecialty training with a Fellowship in Urologic Oncology at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas.

Research

Dr. Narayan's research is focused on understanding the mechanisms that underlie bladder cancer treatment responses, in an effort to improve the therapeutic options available to patients. During his fellowship, he completed a year of basic science research investigating novel therapeutics for urothelial cancers including intravesical gene therapy, immune-based treatment options, and the role of the urinary microbiome in bladder cancer treatment. He has also led projects studying quality outcomes for patients hospitalized after radical cystectomy and has conducted methodologic research studying the conduct of clinical urologic research and the transparent reporting of randomized trials and systematic reviews.

Publications

Dr. Narayan has authored, contributed, and presented dozens of abstracts, peer-reviewed articles, and book chapters on urologic oncology and methodologic research at national and international medical meetings and in major medical journals. He currently serves as a Contact Editor for Cochrane Urology.
