Biography

Max D. Cooper, MD, is a Georgia Research Alliance Eminent Scholar and a member of the Emory Vaccine Center and the Center for AIDS Research at Emory University School of Medicine. Dr. Cooper is a member of the Cancer Prevention and Control Research Program at Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. In recognition of his fundamental contributions to immunology, Dr. Cooper was inducted into the French Academy of Science Institut de France and also was elected as a fellow of the Royal Society. He is a laureate of the prestigious Japan Prize Award received in 2018.

Education

Dr. Cooper obtained his medical degree and pediatric residency training from Tulane University Medical School in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Dr. Cooper's laboratory is involved in studies that explore the use of lamprey monoclonal antibodies for diagnosis and therapy of infectious diseases and lymphoid malignancies.

Awards

In 2019, Dr. Cooper received the Albert Lasker Basic Medical Research Award along with his colleague Dr. Jacques Miller for their discovery of the two distinct classes of lymphocytes, B and T cells, a monumental achievement that launched the course of modern immunology.

Dr. Cooper has received the Emory 1% Award which recognizes Emory faculty whose National Institutes of Health (NIH) proposals have been ranked in the top 1% by NIH reviewers. He has also been named to the MilliPub Club, which recognizes current Emory faculty who have published one or more individual papers throughout their careers that have garnered more than 1,000 citations.
