People Behind Comprehensive Designation

Winship Cancer Institute earned comprehensive cancer center designation from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) as a result of years of hard work and commitment by many people.

Students, Trainees, and Mentees

NCI-comprehensive cancer center designation is due in part to the outstanding students, trainees, and mentees who participate in Winship's education and training programs, and who represent the next generation of cancer researchers and clinicians.

Winship's mission is to lessen the burden of cancer for the citizens of Georgia through aligning its outstanding cancer research and education initiatives with its significant cancer prevention and cancer care efforts. An effective and coordinated education, training and mentorship program is integral to Winship’s mission. It is also a defining feature of an NCI-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center.

NCI-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers provide and prioritize cancer research education, training, and career development of biomedical researchers and health care professionals. Deborah Watkins Bruner, PhD, RN, FAAN, Winship’s associate director for mentorship, education, and training, oversees the integration of these opportunities between schools and departments, monitors progress, and ensures that educational initiatives continue to enhance Winship’s scientific goals.

Winship offers opportunities for learners at nearly every stage: STEM and cancer research experiences for elementary, middle, and high school students; graduate education and postdoctoral training programs that span laboratory, clinical, and population sciences; mentorship and faculty development for early-career investigators; and continuing education for faculty and health care professionals. By providing the highest levels of cancer research education, training, and mentorship experiences within and beyond our campuses, Winship seeks to expand its capacity to lessen the burden of cancer in Georgia.
