People Behind Comprehensive Designation

Winship Cancer Institute earned comprehensive cancer center designation from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) as a result of years of hard work and commitment by many people.

Research Programs at Winship

The leaders of Winship's four research programs are among those who were instrumental in setting Winship on a course for comprehensiveness:

NCI-designated comprehensive cancer centers are distinguished in part by the breadth and depth of their research programs, which span basic science and clinical research, in addition to cancer prevention, control, and population/behavioral sciences.

Winship's research programs are structured to maximize productive, interdisciplinary research from faculty across academic units. Leaders of the research programs coordinate activities and create opportunities for collaboration through program-specific pilot grants, retreats, seminars, shared resources access, joint publications, and competitively funded cancer-related projects.

Winship was awarded comprehensive cancer center designation after a rigorous evaluation process conducted by the NCI and scientists from peer institutions. In both the written grant submission and presentations at a formal site visit, research program leaders effectively demonstrated the depth and breadth of Winship's outstanding science and how it is changing the lives of the citizens of Georgia for the better.
