Winship Executive Director Walter J. Curran Jr., MD was honored with a 2016 American College of Radiology (ACR) gold medal in Washington, DC, on May 15 during the annual ACR meeting. The ACR Gold Medal, awarded by the Board of Chancellors, recognizes individuals that have displayed exceptional, professional contributions to the ACR and to the discipline of radiology.

Dr. Curran is an international expert in advanced lung cancer and malignant brain tumors and the Lawrence W. Davis Professor and Chair at Emory University School of Medicine’s Department of Radiation Oncology. He is responsible for defining a universally adopted staging system for patients with malignant glioma and was the first radiation oncologist to serve as director of a National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center.
