The 7th Winship Win the Fight 5K Run/Walk has raised a record amount of money, bringing in more than $1 million to benefit cancer research at Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University, Georgia's only National Cancer Institute-designed comprehensive cancer center.
More than 3,500 runners and walkers participated in the event held on Saturday, October 14. The deadline to make a contribution was November 30. The final tally is $1,005,123 with more than 5,000 contributors.
"We set an ambitious goal this year and our supporters did an amazing job of helping to make the 7th Winship 5K an extraordinary success," says Walter J. Curran, Jr., MD, executive director of Winship. "This year marks Winship's 80th anniversary and the money raised at the Winship 5K will support innovative cancer research projects that are helping to lessen the cancer burden in the state of Georgia."
Top corporate donors include Hope Sponsor Peach State Freightliner and Discovery Sponsors Delta Air Lines and Arrow Exterminators.
The Winship 5K allows participants to direct their tax-deductible donations to benefit specific cancer research projects based on their personal interests.
Plans are already in the works for the 8th Winship Win the Fight 5K to be held Saturday October 13, 2018 on the Emory University campus.
