Nearly two dozen radiation oncologists from Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University will present at the American Society for Radiation Oncology's (ASTRO) 60th annual meeting, October 21-24, in San Antonio, Texas. The theme for this year's ASTRO conference is "Translating Discovery to Care."

"We are proud that so many Winship faculty are being recognized at ASTRO for their exceptional leadership and innovative research," says Winship Executive Director Walter J. Curran, Jr., MD, "The annual ASTRO conference is always a rich experience, giving Winship members and cancer care providers around the country a platform to share their research and cultivate new opportunities for collaboration."

Recently named ASTRO Fellows and Winship radiation oncologists, Ashesh Jani, MD and Hui-Kuo Shu, MD, PhD will be recognized at ASTRO for their leadership in the field of radiation oncology through research, education, and patient care. Jani and Shu will be honored at an award ceremony on Tuesday, October 23. Among ASTRO's 10,000 members, only 327 have received this honor. Shu will also moderate a panel on "NCI's Quantitative Imaging Network" on October 22 and Jani will present on "Using PET in determining radiation fields and dose" at an educational session on October 24.

Winship residents Chase Escott, MD and Richard Madden, MD will be honored at the same ceremony as Shu and Jani for winning ASTRO Abstract Recognition Awards. Madden, who was mentored by Mohammad Khan, MD, PhD, DABR, FACRO, will present his research on, "In Patients Over 65, Consolidative Radiation for Early Stage Diffuse Large B Cell Lymphoma is Associated with Decreased Hematologic Toxicity and Hospitalizations After RCHOP Compared with RCHOP Alone," on October 22, in the Innovation Hub, Exhibit Hall 3.

Escott will present his research on "Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme Inhibitors or Angiotensin Receptor Blocker use During Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy Associated with Decreased Pneumonitis: A Multi-Center Analysis," on October 23.

Radiation oncologists Bree Eaton, MD will present in a special session on pediatrics and Natia Esiashvili, MD will discuss "Risk of Kyphoscoliosis in Pediatric Patients Receiving Radiation Therapy: Results from the Musculoskeletal Task Force of the Pediatric? Normal Tissue Effects in the Clinic (PENTEC) Initiative."

Sagar Patel, MD will host a special session, "Comparing Whole Heart Versus Coronary Artery Dosimetry in Predicting the Risk of Cardiac Toxicity Following Breast Radiation Therapy."

Additional Winship speakers include Xiaofeng Yang, PhD who will lead a special session, participate in a poster viewing session and a poster viewing Q&A. Several other residents will present posters at ASTRO as well, including >Benjamin Fischer-Valuck, MD and Jim Zhong, MD, and chief residents Robert Press, MD and Matthew Ferris, MD, Sibo Tian, MD, Lisa Sudmeier, MD, Daniel Tanenbaum, MD, Neil Pfister, MD, and Mustafa Abugideiri, MD.
