More than 3,500 runners and walkers participated in the 9th annual Winship Win the Fight 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, October 5 and raised money for cancer research at Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University. The fundraising efforts have brought in more than $767,000 so far.
A portion of the proceeds from the event will fund the new Winship 5K Endowed Professorship which allows Winship investigators to explore new areas of cancer research that may one day lead to new cures.
"We are pleased to honor Larry Boise, PhD, as the inaugural recipient of the Winship 5K Professorship," says Walter J. Curran, Jr., MD, executive director of Winship. "The cancer research projects funded by the Winship 5K and led by Dr. Boise and other Winship scientists are helping to lessen the cancer burden in the state of Georgia."
The Winship Win the Fight 5K allows participants to designate their tax-deductible donations to support the Winship 5K Professorship or cancer research projects based on their interests. Donations will be accepted until November 29, 2019.
Plans are already in the works for the 10th annual Winship Win the Fight 5K to be held on October 3, 2020 at Emory's McDonough Field.
