Four Winship investigators have been named the inaugural recipients of pilot grants funded by the Winship Lung Cancer Specialized Program of Research Excellence (SPORE). Each pilot grant provides $50,000 per year to support projects focused on career enhancement or developmental research.
Led by Suresh S. Ramalingam, MD and Haian Fu, PhD, the five-year, $9.7 million Lung Cancer SPORE grant was issued in July 2019. It's the only grant of its kind to be awarded in the state of Georgia and one of only four SPORE grants in the U.S. dedicated to lung cancer.
This cycle's Career Enhancement Program pilot grant recipients are:
- A rapid and genetically tractable whole animal model to identify novel vulnerabilities in lung cancer
Melissa Gilbert-Ross, PhD - Identifying and Targeting the Immune-Dependent Vulnerabilities in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer

- Elucidating B cell responses in NSCLC with checkpoint inhibitor therapy
Ignacio Sanz, MD - Targeting novel metabolic signaling factors in metastatic lung cancer
