This year's recipients of the Sabrina Williams Oncology Nursing Education Award and the Katie Ferraris Taylor Oncology Nursing Fund Award are Omoye Ehizuelen, BSN, RN, Cara DeBenedictis, RN, BSN and Laura German Horne, BSN, RN, OCN.
Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University (Winship) is pleased to announce the 2020 recipients of the Sabrina Williams Oncology Nursing Education Award and the Katie Ferraris Taylor Oncology Nursing Fund Award. Each award was established by the families of Winship patients as an enduring way to recognize and support the vital role of oncology nurses. Since their inception, the annual awards have supported dozens of Winship nurses in their pursuit of educational and career goals.
Omoye Ehizuelen, BSN, RN, a nurse clinician at Winship at Emory University Hospital Midtown, has received the Sabrina Williams Oncology Nursing Education Award. The award was established by Sabrina Williams to honor her late husband, Tommy, and the dedicated Winship nurses who cared for him when was being treated for lymphoma. The award assists undergraduate and graduate health science majors in earning higher education degrees by providing funding for tuition, fees, and supplies. Ehizuelen will use the funds to obtain a Doctorate of Nursing Practice in Psychiatric Mental Health, with the goal of becoming a nurse practitioner who specializes in the mental health of oncology patients.
Cara DeBenedictis, RN, BSN and Laura German Horne, BSN, RN, OCN are the recipients of the Katie Ferraris Taylor Oncology Nursing Fund Award, which provides financial support for continuing education and professional development in the oncology field. The award honors Winship patient Katie Ferraris Taylor, who asked that remembrances in her name be used to provide lasting tribute to the oncology nurses who cared for her. DeBenedictis, a Winship medical oncology nurse at Emory University Hospital, will use the funds to pursue a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) degree at Mercer University. Horne, a nurse scholar in Winship's Bone Marrow and Stem Cell Transplant Center, is entering her second year of the adult-gerontology nurse practitioner program at Georgia State University and will use the award for tuition.
"The nurses are very deserving of these awards and I know they'll put them to good use in gaining knowledge that will benefit our patients," said Lana K. Uhrig, PhD, RN, MBA, vice president of Cancer Nursing at Winship.
