Jonathon Cohen, MD, MS, hematologist and co-director of the lymphoma program at Winship, has been named chair of Winship’s Data and Safety Monitoring Committee.

Jonathon Cohen, MD, MS, hematologist and co-director of the lymphoma program at Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University (Winship), has been named chair of Winship’s Data and Safety Monitoring Committee (DSMC), one of the key groups that ensures patient safety and data integrity of the center’s clinical trials.

Cohen, an associate professor in the Department of Hematology and Medical Oncology, has served as a member of the DSMC since 2016. He succeeds R. Donald Harvey, PharmD, who was recently named medical director of Winship's Clinical Trials Office. Cohen specializes in treating patients with Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin lymphoma and has led investigator-sponsored, cooperative group, and industry-sponsored trials evaluating novel therapies.

As DSMC chair, Cohen will lead the multidisciplinary committee that monitors ongoing clinical trials to ensure they are safe, effective, and meet the highest standards of scientific and clinical quality. The committee reports to Bassel El-Rayes, MD, Winship's associate director for clinical research, and is guided by rigorous governmental, sponsor, and institutional guidelines, including a data and safety monitoring plan approved by the National Cancer Institute.

"I am honored to be named chair of this committee and to support Winship's commitment to ensuring safe, ethical, and high-quality clinical trials," says Cohen. "Clinical trials are an important way that patients can benefit from treatment advances and that cancer researchers gain new insights into the disease. The studies conducted at Winship provide patients with access to new therapies that would otherwise not be available locally and throughout Georgia. I look forward to supporting our team of world-class clinical investigators."
