Hamilton Health Care System recently opened the Peeples Cancer Institute, a state-of-the-art comprehensive cancer center.

Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University (Winship) announced that Hamilton Medical Center will renew its membership in Winship's cancer network. This ongoing partnership gives patients in the north Georgia region continued access and support in the areas of research and education, further advancing Hamilton's innovative approach to cancer care.

Winship is Georgia's National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center. The Winship Cancer Network brings together an elite group of health systems and hospitals from around the state.

Hamilton, a 255-bed regional acute-care hospital in Dalton, Ga., the cornerstone of Hamilton Health Care System, recently opened the Peeples Cancer Institute, a state-of-the-art comprehensive cancer center.

The Winship Cancer Network was formed to improve access to high quality cancer care, innovative research, and education for the patients and providers of affiliate partners.

Hamilton is one of three health care systems in the network along with Archbold Memorial Hospital in Thomasville and Northeast Georgia Health System in Gainesville.

"We are very excited to continue this partnership with Hamilton Medical Center and to provide area residents with access to cutting-edge cancer treatment advancements," says Suresh S. Ramalingam, MD, Winship's executive director. "Patients will have access to innovative clinical trials, all while collaborating with their local physicians close to home."

"Clinical trials are core components of a comprehensive cancer program," says Jeff Myers, president and chief executive officer for Hamilton Health Care System. "This endeavor with Winship Cancer Network allows the Peeples Cancer Institute at Hamilton Medical Center to offer this specialized service to our patients within the communities we serve. Having access to clinical trials through Winship while receiving the highest level of cancer care at Peeples Cancer Institute removes the physical, emotional, and financial burdens of traveling elsewhere for cancer care."

Through this cancer network affiliation Hamilton and Winship will work together on the development of cancer trial programs, clinical trial enrollment, and cancer care education. In addition, Hamilton patients will have access to Winship’s more than 250 existing therapeutic clinical trials and research projects led by some of the top clinician-investigators in the country.

The physicians and patients in the Winship Cancer Network also benefit from direct access to Winship's tumor boards or multidisciplinary cancer team meetings for collaboration in cancer care.
