New shared resource hub opens in Winship Building B

Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University has opened a new shared resource hub on the third floor of Emory Building B on Clifton Road.

The 8,800-square-foot newly renovated hub brings under one roof more than half of Winship's 12 shared resources, also called core facilities, which provide access to advanced technology and highly specialized expertise to support investigators and their research. Through funding from Winship, the Woodruff Health Sciences Center, Emory schools and units, and a National Cancer Institute Cancer Center Support Grant (P30CA138292), an important infrastructure grant that also maintains Winship's status as Georgia's NCI-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, rates and user fees are kept highly competitive for shared resource users.

"This renovation project has created a modern space that is designed to support multiple shared resources and collaborative, interdisciplinary workflows," said Winship Deputy Director Adam Marcus, PhD. "It's an environment that we anticipate will meaningfully benefit faculty, staff and trainees and the groundbreaking science that our shared resources help facilitate."

Marcus, who serves as scientific director of the Integrated Cellular Imaging Shared Resource, notes that centralizing several shared resources with interrelated themes makes it easier for staff to coordinate projects that involve multiple shared resources. The hub includes newly designed lab space, offices, common areas, a conference room, and a dining area where people can eat lunch and talk science.

Five of Winship's shared resources have already moved to the new space, and two more will relocate later this year. The hub is now the primary location for the Biostatistics, Cancer Animal Models, and Cancer Tissue and Pathology shared resources. It serves as an additional location for three more shared resources: Flow Cytometry, Integrated Cellular Imaging, and Emory Cellular and Immunotherapy Core (ExCITE). The hub will be the future location of the Winship Immune Monitoring Shared Resource.

"The continued growth and optimization of our shared resources is part of our commitment to providing researchers with leading-edge infrastructure, services, and expertise," said Winship Executive Director Suresh Ramalingam, MD, who holds the Roberto C. Goizueta Chair for Cancer Research. "I am confident that the new shared resource hub will enable pioneering research to prevent, diagnose, treat, and survive cancer."
