Winship physicians named Atlanta's "Top Doctors"

Seventy-two Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University physicians were recognized in Atlanta magazine's annual roster of the city's best doctors. The list, published in the magazine's July issue, includes physicians within Emory Healthcare, Emory Healthcare Network, Emory medical staff or faculty of Emory University School of Medicine. This year, 463 Emory physicians made the list out of 1,097 doctors named in the publication – more than any other health system in metro Atlanta.

Inside the issue, three Emory doctors were highlighted in short stories about their most memorable moment, challenging diagnosis or inspiring patient. Jane L. Meisel, MD, Winship breast cancer expert and associate professor in the Emory Departments of Hematology and Medical Oncology and Gynecology and Obstetrics, reminisced about a breast cancer breakthrough. A patient with one of the most aggressive subtypes of breast cancer, and expected to live only 13 months from diagnosis, was able to join a clinical trial that "melted away" her cancer, and it "stayed away." The therapy tested in the trialf has now become the standard of care for patients with metastatic triple negative breast cancer. The patient has since become a breast cancer advocate, lobbying Congress for more funding for cancer research. "People participating in studies like this, the way she did, is how we're able to push the field forward," said Meisel.
