Jim Armitage, MD, is a world-renowned lymphoma expert. He has been a mentor and friend to many of the hematologists specializing in lymphomas at Winship Cancer Institute, including Mary Jo Lechowicz, MD. "There are not many people that you meet that you can grow with as a mentor, where you can ask them any question, show your ignorance, and get a realistic approach to patients and a direct way of thinking about what any mere human physician can actually do for another person."
Armitage, who is the Joe Shapiro Professor of Medicine at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, says that "the Winship Cancer Institute has an extraordinary faculty and interacting with them has been one of the highlights of my career."
Lechowicz says she has collaborated on many research projects with Armitage, and he always makes time to help her. "He is the sort of person who will always pick up the phone when I call and despite his global reputation in lymphoma, he always makes sure to keep track of my progress."
