Dr. Carlson began practicing with Emory Healthcare in 1991 and is currently affiliated with Emory University Hospital, Emory University Hospital Midtown, Grady Memorial Hospital, and Atlanta VA Medical Center. His clinical interests include breast cancer/tumors, breast reconstruction, head and neck cancer, mammography, microvascular surgery, and sentinel node bx-breast. Education
Dr. Carlson graduated from Emory University School of Medicine in 1982. He completed a Residency in General Surgery at Emory University Affiliated Hospitals from 1982-1987 and his second Residency at Emory from 1987-1989 in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He also completed his Fellowship in Surgical Oncology at The University of Texas, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas from 1989-1991.
Research
Dr. Carlson's studies have afforded significant improvement in the outcome of breast reconstruction for patients with breast cancer, particularly his refinement of skin sparing mastectomy in the early years of the procedure. He was one of only a handful of surgeons nationwide performing the technique, and the improvements he made to its methods as well as his outcomes research contributed to making the procedure as common as it is today.
