Bassel El-Rayes, MD, is Professor and Vice Chair for Clinical Research of the Department of Hematology and Medical Oncology at Emory University School of Medicine. Dr. El-Rayes has served as Director of the Winship Gastrointestinal Oncology Program since joining Winship Cancer Institute in 2009. Board certified in hematology and medical oncology, he treats patients with gastrointestinal malignancies.

In 2016, Dr. El-Rayes was selected to hold the John Kauffman Family Professorship for Pancreatic Cancer Research which supports an outstanding leader in the field of pancreatic cancer research and assists with the further development of Winship's gastrointestinal (GI) cancer efforts.


Dr. El-Rayes completed his medical school at the American University of Beirut (AUB). He subsequently joined the internal medicine residency program at Wayne State University. After completion of the residency, he joined the hematology oncology fellowship program at the Karmanos Cancer Institute at Wayne State University.


Dr. El-Rayes is involved in translational research focused on gastrointestinal cancer with special focus on pancreatic and colorectal cancer. In the clinical research, Dr. El-Rayes is focused on drug development and multidisciplinary therapy treatments in patients with early stage or advanced GI cancer.

Dr. El-Rayes has published numerous peer-reviewed articles. He is a reviewer for the Journal of the American Medical Association and Clinical Cancer Research. He serves on the editorial board of Cancer.

In 2019, Dr. El-Rayes received the Emory University School of Medicine Mentoring Award for demonstrating outstanding mentoring in the domains of education, service, and/or research to trainees or early career faculty during the year.
