Biography

Dayna Johnson, PhD, MPH, MSW, MS, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Epidemiology at Rollins School of Public Health.

Dr. Johnson is a member of the Cancer Prevention and Control research program at Winship Cancer Institute. 

Education

Dr. Johnson earned both her Master of Public Health and Master of Social Work degree from University of Michigan in 2007. She then went on to earn her Masters degree in Epidemiologic Science, 2010, and PhD in Epidemiologic Science, 2014, from the University of Michigan. Dr. Johnson completed her postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women's Hospital in Sleep and Circadian Disorders, 2017.

Research

Dr. Johnson's research is aimed at understanding the root causes of sleep health disparities and their impact on chronic diseases by 1) addressing the social and environmental determinants of sleep disorders and insufficient sleep; and 2) investigating the influence of modifiable factors such as sleep disorders and disturbances on disparities in health outcomes. More specifically, her research further explicates the social contributors to racial/ethnic and gender disparities in sleep by quantifying the contribution of social, household-level and neighborhood-level factors with objective and well-validated subjective measures of insufficient sleep. She is particularly interested in investigating sleep quality in childhood patients, survivors, and their care takers.

Awards

Dr. Johnson received the NIH Loan Repayment Health Disparities Award in 2018 and the Chair’s Research Award from the Department of Medicine, Harvard Medical School in 2017.
