Biography
Allan Pickens, MD, is an Associate Professor of Surgery at Emory University School of Medicine. Board certified in both general surgery and cardiothoracic surgery, Dr. Pickens specializes in treating lung and esophageal cancer, as well as, in performing lung transplantation, minimally invasive thoracoscopic and robotic thoracic surgery.
After completing surgical training and prior to joining Emory, Dr. Pickens was a faculty member at the University of Michigan from 2005-2009.
Dr. Pickens is a member of the Discovery and Developmental Therapeutics research program at Winship Cancer Institute. He also holds memberships with American College of Chest Physicians, American College of Surgeons, American Medical Association, European Association for Cardiothoracic Surgery and Society of Thoracic Surgeons.
Education
Dr. Pickens received his BS in Microbiology from University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, AL in 1990. He received his Medical Degree from University of Alabama School of Medicine in Birmingham, AL in 1995. Dr. Pickens did general surgery residency at the University of Alabama, where he also did 2 years of basic science research studying the molecular biology of cancer. In 2004, he completed cardiothoracic surgery residency at the University of Michigan. Afterwards, he did a Minimally Invasive Thoracic Surgery Fellowship at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles, CA and an Esophageal Cancer Fellowship at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI.
Research
Dr. Pickens' research interests include clinical and translational lung cancer research, and minimally invasive surgical technology.
