Biography

Toncred Marya Styblo, MD, MS, is professor in the Division of Surgical Oncology of the Department of Surgery at Emory University School of Medicine. Dr. Styblo is a surgical oncologist specializing in the treatment of breast cancer. She joined the faculty of the Emory University Department of Surgery in 1988 and has been a Diplomat of the American Board of Surgery since 1986.

Dr. Styblo is the Georgia State Representative for the Association of Women Surgeons and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. She is a member of numerous medical societies including the Society of Surgical Oncology and the American Society of Clinical Oncology. She is the physician liaison of the American College of Surgeons Cancer Program at Emory University Hospital and a member of the Breast Committee of both NRG and ECOG-ACRIN national oncology cooperative groups. She has contributed to notable breast cancer research and is world-renowned for her care.

Education

Dr. Styblo received her Bachelor of Science and Master of Science at Stanford University. She attended medical school at the Saint Louis University School of Medicine, where she also completed her internship and residency in general surgery. Dr. Styblo completed the Society of Surgical Oncology-approved Surgical Oncology Fellowship at the VCU Health System of the Medical College of Virginia.

Research

For over three decades, Dr. Styblo has been active both locally and nationally in clinical and translational research. Of particular note are her research collaborations with the late Dr. John Bostwick in skin-sparing mastectomy with immediate breast reconstruction, with Emory radiologist Dr. Naomi Alazraki in clinical trials to establish sentinel lymph node biopsy as a standard of care for axillary staging, and with Emory plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. Albert Losken in the use of oncoplastic reduction to improve the outcome of patients having breast conserving therapy.

Awards

Since 1986, Dr. Styblo has been named Atlanta's Top Doctors, America's Top Surgeons, and Best Doctors in America, and she received the Patient Choice Award. She has also received two consecutive Cancer Liaison Physician Outstanding Performance Awards from the American College of Surgeons' Commission on Cancer.
