Winship Mentorship Program

In recognition of the critical role that mentorship plays in faculty development, Winship Cancer Institute offers support and resources to encourage mentoring relationships.

Winship is targeting priority areas for mentorship of junior faculty.

The priorities include developing a promotion dossier, grantsmanship, guidance on producing publications, management and execution of research, and participation in or management of team science. Other critical areas include incorporating technology in the classroom, managing difficult situations, teaching in an inter-professional simulation or class, maximizing the impact of scholarship, and test writing.

Winship research programs are committed to ensuring that members have assigned mentors and incorporating mentorship events in their programming. Other initiatives include a Nominations subcommittee to proactively identify and nominate Winship members for appropriate internal and national awards, committees, and appointments. A second subcommittee, the Women in Winship subcommittee chaired by Kristin Higgins, MD, and Catherine Williams, seeks to develop mentorship resources and leadership training specific to the needs of women in cancer and academia.

The Winship Faculty and Trainee Development Committee, co-chaired by Dr. Bruner and Kimberly Kerstann, PhD, senior director for Research Administration, reviews new member applications, assigns new members to appropriate programs, and recommends mentors as needed.

Winship faculty interested in becoming a mentor or mentee should contact Deborah Watkins Bruner, RN, PhD at deborah.w.bruner@emory.edu.
