Diagnosing Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor (GIST) at Emory Winship

If a patient exhibits symptoms that suggest a Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor, a doctor may suggest scans such as a CT Scan which can help locate and identify a tumor through computer imaging. A biopsy may also be performed in order to examine a sample of gastrointestinal tissue under a microscope and to see if any cancerous cells are present. A pathologist can only determine a diagnosis by examining tissue from a biopsy.
