Specialized breast care may be right for you even if you don’t have a breast cancer diagnosis.
Our breast experts offer knowledgeable, compassionate care for a wide range of breast changes and problems. We offer evaluation and guidance for women and men with breast concerns, imaging findings that need follow-up or questions about their breast cancer risk.
You may benefit from a Breast Health Center visit if you have:
Breast pain, discomfort or a new lump or other change in your breast
A mammogram or imaging result that needs follow-up
A breast biopsy showing non-cancerous but atypical cells
Dense breasts and questions about what that means for your health
Questions or concerns about breast cancer risk based on your personal or family history
Most breast concerns are not cancer, but they should still be evaluated. Our team can help you get answers and determine the right next step.
How Breast Health Centers Can Help
Our Breast Health Centers are here to protect your current — and future — breast health.
When you come to us, we first evaluate the breast problem you have now. It could be a painful lump in your breast or other abnormal mammogram results. We’ll perform a comprehensive exam and take the time to answer all your questions. Based on your findings, we’ll work with you to create a plan to monitor or treat your breast concern.
We also go a step further to safeguard your long-term breast health. We’ll conduct a full breast cancer risk assessment to measure your chances for developing breast cancer in the future. If we determine you are at increased risk for breast cancer, we will work with you to develop a personalized care plan for ongoing screening and help you understand your options for reducing breast cancer risk. Based on your needs, we may recommend a personalized care plan that includes:
Additional breast imaging
Enhanced monitoring and screening
A referral for genetic counseling and testing
Recommendations on diet, exercise and weight management
Medication for breast cancer prevention
Our team works closely with specialists at Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University to coordinate care if further evaluation or cancer care is needed.
As Georgia’s only NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, Winship also provides access to pioneering clinical trials focused on prevention. Talk with your doctor if you’re interested in participating in a study.
At our Breast Health Centers, appointments are designed to give you the time and attention you need. With specialized breast health training, our physician assistants and nurse practitioners have the expertise to assess your condition.
During your appointment, our providers will take time to evaluate your concern, answer your questions and guide your next steps. They can help you schedule a follow-up visit for new imaging or additional testing. If needed, they can also connect you with a breast surgeon or cancer specialist for surgical care and support.

Frequently Asked Questions
No, you do not need a physician referral to make an appointment. You can contact a Breast Health Center directly. Your primary care doctor or OBGYN may refer you if they identify a concern during a visit.
An abnormal or inconclusive mammogram result is one of the most common reasons to contact a Breast Health Center. The team will evaluate the finding and help determine what, if anything, needs to happen next.
No, not every lump or breast change is cancer. But you should have every new lump or change evaluated. A Breast Health Center visit includes an evaluation of the current concern along with a formal breast cancer risk assessment.
Yes, you don’t need symptoms to see a provider at an Emory Breast Health Center. A family history of breast cancer or other questions about risk are valid reasons to contact one of our teams.
A routine mammogram screens patients with no symptoms. A Breast Health Center visit evaluates a specific concern, finding or risk question. It also includes a breast cancer risk assessment. This appointment is a next step beyond routine screening — not a replacement for it.
For most patients, breast imaging is vital for creating a personalized care plan. Emory Healthcare offers comprehensive mammography services. Find an Emory Healthcare breast imaging location near you.
