Shirish Gadgeel, MBBS, FASCO
Shirish Gadgeel, MBBS, FASCO, a nationally recognized thoracic oncologist and clinical researcher, joins Emory University School of Medicine and Winship Cancer Institute as professor and vice chair for clinical research in the Department of Hematology and Medical Oncology.
"We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Gadgeel to Emory," says Sagar Lonial, MD, FACP, FASCO, Winship's chief medical officer, chair of the Department of Hematology and Medical Oncology and the Anne and Bernard Gray Family Chair in Cancer. “His deep expertise in thoracic oncology and longstanding leadership in clinical research will be instrumental in advancing our mission to improve outcomes for patients with cancer.”
Gadgeel comes to Atlanta from the Henry Ford Cancer Institute in Detroit, where he served as division head for hematology/oncology and associate director of patient experience and clinical care. Prior to Henry Ford, he was a professor of internal medicine and was the Mary Lou Kennedy Research Professor in Thoracic Oncology at the University of Michigan and Michigan Medicine. He started his career at the Karmanos Cancer Institute/Wayne State University in Detroit, where he served as the leader of the Multidisciplinary Thoracic Oncology team and the co-leader of the Molecular Therapeutics program. He served as faculty for the annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and as a member of its education committee. He currently serves on the Career Development Committee for the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer. He is the associate editor for the Clinical Lung Cancer journal and co-chair of the Targeted Therapies of Lung Cancer meeting. He also serves as a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of ALK Positive.
"Dr. Gadgeel has been at the forefront of developing targeted therapies for lung cancer and is recognized internationally for his innovative work," says Suresh S. Ramalingam, MD, FACP, FASCO, Winship's executive director, the Roberto C. Goizueta Distinguished Chair for Cancer Research and a professor of hematology and medical oncology who also specializes in lung cancer. "His expertise and mentorship will be incredible assets to both our patients and our teams."
In his new role as vice chair for clinical research and professor, Gadgeel will lead and expand clinical research efforts within the department, building on more than two decades of experience conducting clinical trials and advancing treatment options for thoracic malignancies. He will focus on expanding access to clinical trials at all Winship clinical sites. He will serve on the thoracic oncology team at Winship at Emory Midtown and Emory Saint Joseph’s Hospital, where he will collaborate closely with radiation oncologists, medical oncologists, thoracic surgeons and interventional pulmonologists to deliver multidisciplinary care.
“I am excited to join Emory, where there is a clear commitment to innovation in clinical research,” says Gadgeel. “The opportunity to collaborate with leading experts, both translational scientists and clinical researchers, expand clinical trials portfolio and access to improve outcomes for cancer patients and mentor junior faculty while relentlessly pursuing knowledge and wisdom, made this an especially compelling move.”
Gadgeel earned his medical degree and completed his internal medicine residency at Grant Medical College at the University of Mumbai. He then completed an additional residency and internship at LaGuardia Hospital, now Long Island Jewish Forest Hills, in New York. He later completed a residency in Internal Medicine and a fellowship in hematology and oncology at Wayne State University School of Medicine in Michigan.
