More than 260 nursing professionals from across the region attended Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University’s 17th Annual Oncology Nursing Symposium at the Crowne Plaza Atlanta Perimeter at Ravinia, Aug. 21-22.

The symposium featured presentations from national and local experts examining some of the most pressing issues facing oncology nurses today. Keynote speaker Renee Thompson, DNP, RN, FAONL, FAAN, CSP®, chief executive officer and founder of the Healthy Workforce Institute, set the tone with a talk titled, “Empowered, Caring and Engaged: A Roadmap for Today’s Nursing Workforce.”
Plenary talks addressed mental health and emotional wellbeing in oncology nursing, the delivery of complex cancer care and the importance of patient and caregiver perspectives through a panel of Winship Patient Family Advisors. Breakout sessions expanded on the symposium’s theme, offering insights into cancer rehabilitation, clinical trials, symptom management, adolescent and young adult oncology, advocacy and the growing role of artificial intelligence in patient care.
“Oncology nurses are delivering increasingly sophisticated cancer treatments while also helping patients navigate the physical, emotional and quality-of-life aspects of care across the cancer continuum,” says Colleen Lewis, MSN, ANP-BC, AOCNP, senior vice president of cancer nursing for Winship and Emory Healthcare. “This year’s symposium was designed to support nurses in these multifaceted roles by strengthening evidence-based practice, fostering connection and emphasizing the compassionate care that defines oncology nursing.”
Beyond the educational program, attendees had opportunities to connect with colleagues from across the region. Scientific poster presenters shared findings from 11 innovative research projects; Happy Tails pet therapy animals brought smiles during breaks; and a disco-themed bingo reception offered a chance to relax, network and celebrate the oncology nursing community.
