Specialized Programs of Research Excellence (SPORE)

Winship's National Cancer Institute Specialized Programs of Research Excellence or SPORE grant is a unique translational cancer research program that supports an elite team of investigators.

A National Cancer Institute (NCI) SPORE grant allows researchers to develop novel approaches for not only treating cancer but improving patient outcomes.

Guided by urgent clinical needs, the multi-disciplinary teams of physician and basic scientists work to address current challenges and to develop the next generation of innovative therapeutic strategies for cancer patients.

The NCI established the Specialized Programs of Research Excellence in 1992 with the Translational Research Program as its home in an effort to promote collaborative, interdisciplinary translational cancer research.

Lung Cancer SPORE

In 2019, Winship Cancer Institute earned a competitive SPORE grant to support team-driven innovative research efforts in immunotherapies and molecularly targeted therapies. The SPORE brings together investigators in the fields of immunology, pharmacology, medical oncology, radiation oncology, surgical oncology, and pathology to address major therapeutic challenges faced by patients with non-small cell lung cancer.
