Winship Leads the Way in Helping to Decrease APL Mortality

The Winship Community Outreach initiative reports a very encouraging update on the acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) clinical trial that has been underway for over two years: a decrease in mortality from 37 percent to 7.5 percent. Leaders of the team, Anand Jillella, MD, Martha Arellano, MD, and Vamsi Kota, MD, have been working with community doctors and cancer centers to manage patients with this highly aggressive form of leukemia. Sixty percent of the 119 patients already accrued to the trial are at community health centers. The trial will continue accruing patients until June 2016.
