Cassels to Retire After Two Decades at Emory

Diane Cassels announced she will retire from her position as Winship's Chief Administrative Officer on January 6, 2017. Winship Executive Director Walter J. Curran, Jr., MD, says "Diane has had an extraordinary influence on Winship and Emory during the past 24 years. Her service in a number of significant administrative roles will leave an indelible mark on our organization."
Melanoma and Lung Cancer Clinical Trial Now Open for Brain Metastases Patients
Winship physician-scientist Mohammad K. Khan MD, PhD is the principal investigator of a new clinical trial that will study the effects of radiation therapy and immunotherapy in combination to treat melanoma and non-small cell lung cancer patients with brain metastases. The study will use stereotactic radiosurgery and the anti-PD1 immunotherapy drug pembrolizumab.

Winship Offers New Services with National Cancer Database Files
The Winship Research Informatics Shared Resource is now providing access to National Cancer Database files for solid and hematologic malignancies for the years 2004-2014. This service is available to Winship members for research purposes and is provided in collaboration with the Biostatistics and Bioinformatics Shared Resource. Project requests are now being accepted.

Grant to Help with Support Services for Breast Cancer Patients

Mylin Torres, MD and Winifred Thompson, PhD have received a $50,000 grant from the Avon-Pfizer Metastatic Breast Cancer Grants Program, Identify-Amplify-Unify. The funds will be used for enhanced lay navigation services for under-resourced metastatic breast cancer patients receiving treatment at the Avon Foundation Comprehensive Breast Center of Grady Health System and the Glenn Family Breast Center at Winship. Some of the funds will go toward assisting patients with transportation to and from appointments.
Winship Welcomes Atlanta Clergy
Winship hosted a group from the Concerned Black Clergy of Metropolitan Atlanta, Inc. on October 27 to discuss the need for bone marrow donors from the African-American community. Established in 1983, the mission of the organization is to provide leadership, advocacy, and service to community members in need.
Masters Promoted to Nursing Specialty Director
Connie Masters, MSN, MBA, RN, OCN has been promoted to nursing specialty director for Winship locations at Emory Saint Joseph's Hospital, Emory Johns Creek Hospital, and Emory at Buford, where she will be responsible for ambulatory oncology nursing practices.
