Emory Schools and Departments Top Ranked in NIH Funding

Research grants by Winship investigators and Emory faculty were key in achieving top rankings for National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding in the annual Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research report. Seven Emory schools and departments earned top 10 rankings among their peer units, including the Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing, which was ranked number one.

Karen Effinger, MD, Vikas Gupta, MD, PhD, Bernardo Mainou, PhD, and Soma Sengupta, MD, PhD have each received an American Cancer Society Institutional Research Grant, awarded annually by Winship to support early-career investigators.

Ramalingam Elected to ASCI
Suresh Ramalingam, MD, deputy director of Winship and assistant dean for cancer research in the Emory School of Medicine, was elected to the American Society for Clinical Investigation (ASCI). A formal induction ceremony will be held in April in Chicago.

Call for Proposals: Prostate Cancer Pilot Grant
Thanks to generous gifts from the Senior Men's Golf Association of Dunwoody Country Club and the club's John Kauffman Prostate Cancer Golf Event, the Winship Invest$ prostate cancer research pilot grant will fund innovative proposals with budgets of up to $30,000. Applications are due March 1.

Maithel Chairs GI Symposium Session
Winship surgical oncologist Shishir Maithel, MD moderated a session on cancers of the pancreas, small bowel, and hepatobiliary tract at the Gastrointestinal Cancers Symposium January 21-23 in San Francisco. Maithel is a co-founder and former course director of Winship's Gastrointestinal Cancers Symposium, which will be held November 4 on the Emory campus.

LEO Study Launches Website

The Lymphoma Epidemiology of Outcomes (LEO) study team at Winship led by Christopher Flowers, MD has recently launched a new website. The study is one of the first of its kind for developing the infrastructure to study patient care and cancer survivorship among lymphoma patients.
