New Winship Grant To Support Women with Gynecologic Cancer

Winship has received a $60,000 Ovarian Cancer Research Fund Alliance grant to establish a Woman to Woman program for patients. The program pairs gynecologic cancer patients with trained and supervised survivor volunteers to provide one-on-one mentoring and support. Namita Khanna, MD, will serve as the physician champion for the program.

Reed Named Executive Director of Development
Winship has named Paula Reed its new executive director of development. In this role, Reed will lead a team responsible for raising more than $215 million in philanthropic donations for cancer-related projects at Winship in the current fiscal year.

Chhabra Named Director of Business and Finance
Aman Chhabra, MBA, has joined Winship as the new director, business and finance. In this newly created role, Chhabra will serve as Winship's senior financial executive, providing leadership and support to center-wide operations and programs.
Ahmed Featured in New "Waking the Immune System" Videos
In a new Emory video series, Rafi Ahmed, PhD, director of the Emory Vaccine Center and a Winship member, recounts 30 years studying the human immune system to improve vaccines, battle chronic infections, and tackle cancer. Ahmed's highly influential work have helped shape key concepts in human immunity.

Zhong Earns V Foundation Award
Winship radiation oncologist Jim Zhong, MD, has been awarded a $50,000 Clinical Trials Outreach Grant from the V Foundation. The grant will support Zhong's project, "Health care disparities in patients with advanced breast cancer with brain metastases: Increasing minority access to clinical trials through the use of optimal communication strategies."

Bright Start for 1000 by 2020 Clinical Trials Initiative

On August 6, Winship launched the 1000 by 2020 Clinical Trials Initiative, marking a renewed commitment to educating all clinical team members, patients, and caregivers on the benefits of participating in clinical research and how results of these trials can make a difference for generations of cancer patients to come. Last week, clinical leaders visited with oncology nurses to talk about the new initiative.

Kucuk Keynotes Tibetan Medicine Conference
Earlier in August, Winship medical oncologist Omer Kucuk, MD, delivered a keynote speech, "Botanicals in Integrative Cancer Medicine and Health," in Beijing, China, at the 4th Annual Meeting for the Specialty Committee of Tibetan Medicine of the World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies and the Beijing International Conference on Tibetan Medicine.
Winship Teams Help Plan New Clinic at Midtown
Construction on a new multidisciplinary head and neck cancer clinic will soon get underway on the 10th floor of Emory University Hospital Midtown. Later in the month, staff members will be participating in an integrated facility design project, similar to what was done for the new Phase I Unit in the Emory University Hospital Tower.

Imaging Core Launches MicroTalks Seminar Series
The Integrated Cellular Imaging Shared Resource will present µTalks, a microscopy educational seminar series, at various locations from August to October. The opening talks on fluorescent labeling will be held Aug. 13 and Aug. 16.

Volunteer for Swim Across America
The 2018 Swim Across America will take place on Saturday, Sept. 22 at Lake Lanier. This year, funds will benefit a leukemia research project led by Douglas Graham, MD, PhD, director of the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center of Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.
