Dhodapkar Named Director of New Center for Cancer Immunology at Winship

Madhav V. Dhodapkar, MBBS, a world-renowned expert in cancer immunology and translational immunotherapy, will join Winship on Mar. 1 as the director of the new Winship Center for Cancer Immunology. He will be appointed as the Anise McDaniel Brock Chair and Georgia Research Alliance Eminent Scholar in Cancer Innovation and professor in the Department of Hematology and Medical Oncology in the Emory School of Medicine. His wife Kavita Dhodapkar, MBBS (left) will join the Emory faculty as an associate professor in pediatrics and director of the Pediatric Immuno-Oncology Program at the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.

Fashion a Cure Event Raises Funds for Cancer Research

Nearly $300,000 was raised for cancer research at the 6th annual Friends of Winship Fashion a Cure Fashion Show held at the St. Regis Atlanta on Jan. 29. The funds will be used to purchase a critical new piece of equipment in the Winship Cancer Tissue and Pathology Shared Resource. Pictured: Winship Executive Director Walter J. Cooper Honored with Japan Prize

The Japan Prize Foundation has announced Max Cooper, MD as a laureate of the 2018 Japan Prize. Cooper is being awarded the prize in the category "Medical Science and Medicinal Science" for the discovery of the dual nature of adaptive immunity, which identified the cellular building blocks of the immune system as we understand it today.

Call for Posters: Winship Scientific Symposium

Students, trainees, and junior faculty are invited to present a research poster at the Feb. 15 poster session and kick-off reception for the Winship Scientific Symposium. Four 1st place ($450 each) and four 2nd place ($300 each) prizes will be awarded. Submit your abstract title and register by Feb. 7. Faculty may also register to serve as a poster judge.

Call for Proposals: SPORE in Head and Neck Cancer

Winship's NCI Specialized Programs of Research Excellence (SPORE) grant in head and neck cancer is seeking proposals for its Developmental Research and Career Enhancement programs led by Drs. Dong Moon Shin, Nabil Saba, Taofeek Owonikoko, and Jin-Tang Dong. Proposals are due Apr. 6.
