Targeting Cancer by Sabotaging the DNA Repair See-Saw
Winship researchers have discovered how to disable a protein, called Mcl-1, and make cancer cells more vulnerable to DNA replication stresses. Compounds that target Mcl-1 could form a new class of anticancer drugs, says Xingming Deng, MD, PhD, lead author of the study published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation.

New Methods Reveal the Biomechanics of Blood Clotting
As reported in Nature Methods, a Winship research team led by chemist Khalid Salaita, PhD have developed a new imaging technology to study the biomechanics of platelets. The technology could help investigators visualize a range of processes, including immune cell activation and cancer metastasis.

People Behind CCC

Winship's new National Cancer Institute comprehensive cancer center designation is due in part to collaborative efforts to better understand cancer at the molecular level. Winship is a member of the Oncology Research Information Exchange Network (ORIEN), a unique partnership among North America's top cancer centers that aims to collect and share big data in support of precision medicine research. Company Raises $100K for Winship Melanoma Research
Carolina Auto Auction raised $100,000 for melanoma research at Winship in honor of company owner Henry Stanley, a melanoma survivor who was treated at Winship. The amount includes proceeds from the company's charity auction and several employee-driven fundraisers held in 2017.
