Winship Marks 18th Year of Summer Scholars Program

The Summer Scholars Research Program wrapped up its 18th year on July 13 with a symposium and poster session. Graduating students presented findings from their six weeks working with a Winship research team.

Van Meir Lab Receives DoD Idea Award
Erwin Van Meir, PhD (left), leader of Winship's Cancer Cell Biology Research Program, has received an Idea Award with Special Focus from the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), one of only five such grants given in the Brain Cancer topic area this cycle. The two-year, $624,000 grant will support research from postdoctoral fellow Satoru Osuka, MD, PhD (right), who is studying the role of N-cadherin in the therapeutic resistance of glioblastoma.
 
  
Ivanov Awarded Best Poster by CTD2 Network
Winship investigator Andrey Ivanov, PhD, and MD/PhD student Sean Doyle received the 1st place poster award for their research on neomorph protein-protein interactions at the NCI's Cancer Target Discovery and Development (CTD2) Network annual meeting held June 21-22. Founded in 2017, the Emory CTD2 Center is led by Winship principal investigator Haian Fu, PhD. Pictured: Doyle, Emory collaborator Xiulei Mo, PhD, and Ivanov.

Winship is committed to accelerating the testing of new cancer treatments through clinical research. Winship recognizes the following physicians at each Winship study site who have enrolled the most patients onto interventional cancer clinical trials during the last three months (April - June 2018): Drs. Sarah Friend (Emory Saint Joseph's Hospital), Walid Shaib (Clifton Campus), Nabil Saba (Midtown), Wayne Harris and Chunzhi Xia (Atlanta VAMC), and Joseph Shelton (Grady).

Winship colorectal surgeon Glen Balch, MD, presented the Medical & Surgical Grand Rounds talk on colorectal cancer to colleagues at Tift Regional Medical Center on July 10 in Tifton, Ga. Balch serves as chief of the Division of Colorectal Surgery in Emory's Department of Surgery.
