NBA Hall of Famer to Kick Off Winship 5K

For the second year in a row, nine-time NBA All-Star and Hall of Fame inductee Dominique Wilkins will serve as the grand marshal of the Winship Win the Fight 5K. This year's run/walk will take place on Saturday, Oct. 13 on the Emory University Quadrangle on Dowman Drive.

Study Shows Vitamin D Associated with Lower Risk for Colorectal Cancer
Winship member Veronika Fedirko, PhD, MPH is co-first author of an international study that showed higher circulating vitamin D concentrations are significantly associated with lower colorectal cancer risk. The findings were published June 14 in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

Reviving the Protector: New Tactic Against Medulloblastoma
Winship scientists, led by senior author Erwin Van Meir, PhD, describe a new tactic against medulloblastoma in the June 11 issue of Cancer Cell. The Winship Win the Fight 5K has established a new fund for donations that will support an annual Winship 5K Endowed Professorship in Cancer Research. The Winship 5K Professorship will recognize faculty for exceptional service both at the institutional and national levels. Nominations are due July 13.

Mylin Torres, MD, director of the Glenn Family Breast Center at Winship, is one of 16 physicians selected from the U.S. and overseas to participate in the American Association of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) 2018 Leadership Development Program. Window Into Winship

This week, meet Winship volunteer Bari Ross. Ross, who first came to Winship as a patient, is a volunteer chair of the Winship Patient & Family Advisors (PFA), a member of the Emory Healthcare PFA Council, and a Winship Peer Partner. She was recently appointed to a three-year term as a patient advocate on the National Cancer Institute's Head & Neck Steering Committee's Metastatic Recurrent Task Force. As a Task Force member, Ross will help develop evidence-based strategies for clinical trials designed to improve the quality of life for patients with head and neck cancer.
