Winship Gala Raises $1.1 Million for Cancer Research

The fifth Winship Cancer Institute Gala raised more than $1.1 million for cancer research at Winship. Proceeds from the event, held Mar. 24 at the St. Regis Atlanta, will support grants for the new Winship Center for Cancer Immunology as well as research projects focused on prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of various cancers. CAR T-Cell Therapy Now Offered at Winship
Winship is now one of 36 cancer centers in the U.S. offering CAR T-cell therapy for patients with non-Hodgkin lymphoma. CAR T-cell therapy is a type of immunotherapy recently approved by the Food and Drug Administration. Winship's Jonathon Cohen, MD, MS discusses CAR T-cell therapy in a new video.

Joint Supplement Speeds Melanoma Cell Growth
Winship investigators have found that chondroitin sulfate, a dietary supplement taken to strengthen joints, accelerated the growth of a type of melanoma in cell culture and mouse models. The results were published Mar. 15 in Molecular Cell.

Harvey Receives HOPA Award
R. Donald Harvey, PharmD (pictured with HOPA colleagues) received the Award of Excellence from the Hematology/Oncology Pharmacy Association (HOPA) on Mar. 22 in Denver. The annual award recognizes one pharmacy pioneer who has shaped practice and positively impacted trainees, treatments, and research.

Winship members Drs. Eric Ortlund and Yijian Huang are among the recipients of Pilot Translational & Clinical Studies program awards recently named by the Georgia Clinical & Translational Science Alliance (Georgia CTSA).

Registration Opens for Winship 5K

More than three thousand 3,000 walkers and runners are expected to lace up their sneakers and raise money for cancer research on Saturday, Oct. 13 at the 8th annual Winship Win the Fight 5K. Registration is officially open for the event, which is a Peachtree Road Race qualifier.

Lipscomb Named to National Cancer Control Committee
Winship member Joseph Lipscomb, PhD has been named to an ad hoc committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine that will examine cancer control efforts in the U.S. and recommend a national strategy.
