Winship's Glenn Family Breast Center Holds 3rd Annual Retreat

The Glenn Family Breast Center at Winship held its 3rd annual retreat on May 11 at Emory's Health Sciences Research Building. The half-day event included talks from clinicians and researchers, updates on practice guidelines, and a shark tank-style competition to fund an investigator-initiated study up to $50,000. Presenters included (from left) Drs. Adam Marcus, Keerthi Gogineni, Lea Gilliland, Mylin Torres, Rebecca Pentz, Jolinta Lin, Brianna McDevitt, and Lauren McCullough.

Curran Keynotes Alma Mater's Hooding Ceremony
Winship Executive Director Walter J. Curran, Jr., MD was the keynote speaker at Medical College of Georgia's Hooding Ceremony on May 11. Curran, an alumnus of the Augusta institution, was selected for the honor by the Class of 2018.
 
  
Shanmugam Awarded Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Grant
Mala Shanmugam, PhD received a three-year, $600,000 Translational Research Program award from the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society for her project, "Deciphering the Metabolic Basis for t(11;14) Multiple Myeloma Venetoclax Sensitivity."
 
 
 
     
 
 
Moore Receives Emory's Thomas Jefferson Award
In recognition of his leadership, commitment, and "heroic efforts in community health and service," Winship otolaryngologist Charles Moore, MD (pictured at the HEALing Community Center, which he founded) will receive the 2018 Thomas Jefferson Award at the Emory Commencement ceremony on May 14.

Wu Speaks at Atlanta Chinese American Alliance Seminar
Winship medical oncologist Christina Wu, MD gave a talk on gastrointestinal oncology to members of the Atlanta Chinese American Alliance on May 9. The seminar was part of engagement efforts related to Minority Cancer Awareness Month.

This week we take you to behind the scenes of a special moment that happened on the Clifton Campus on May 8. Ron Gant, morning anchor and former Atlanta Braves player, delivered well-wishes to Sue Light in Winship's radiation oncology waiting room. The surprise, set up by daughter Jenny and FOX 5 Atlanta's Christy Hutchings brought the brain cancer patient to tears.
