ONS Congress Honors Bruner, Highlights Winship Nursing Research

Deborah Watkins Bruner, PhD, RN, Winship associate director for mentorship, education and training, was honored at the 43rd annual meeting of the Oncology Nursing Society in Washington, D.C., May 17-20, 2018. Bruner received the 2018 Rose Mary Carroll-Johnson Distinguished Award for Consistent Contribution to Nursing Literature. Winship oncology nursing teams presented clinical research throughout the conference, which drew an estimated 4,000 participants. Wechsler Named Thomas R. Giddens Chair for Oncology
Winship member Daniel Wechsler, MD, PhD, director of pediatric oncology at the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center of Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, was honored with the Thomas R. Meisel Recognized as Health Care Hero Finalist
Winship medical oncologist Jane Meisel, MD from the Glenn Family Breast Center was named as a finalist by the Atlanta Business Chronicle in the annual Health Care Heroes Awards competition. Meisel was nominated in the Rising Star category. Meisel specializes in treating patients with breast and gynecologic cancers, including breast, cervical, endometrial, and ovarian cancers.
 
 
 
     
 
 
Tian Receives ASCO Merit Award
Radiation oncology resident Sibo Tian, MD is the recipient of a 2018 Conquer Cancer Foundation of ASCO Merit Award for his abstract, "Survival Outcomes by HPV Status in Non-Oropharyngeal Head and Neck Cancers: A Propensity Score Matched Analysis of Population Level Data." Tian will present his research during an oral abstract session on June 3 at the ASCO Annual Meeting in Chicago.
 
  
Escott and Madden To Be Honored at ASTRO
Two radiation oncology residents will receive awards at the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) annual meeting in October. Chase Escott, MD, mentored by Kristin Higgins, MD, earned the Resident Poster Viewing Recognition Award. Nicholas Madden, MD, mentored by Mohammad Khan, MD, PhD, earned the Resident Poster Discussion Recognition Award.
 
 
 

Window Into Winship

This week we take you to India where Winship members recently traveled to meet with collaborators on their National Cancer Institute P20 Regional Center for Research Excellence grant. The project, "Planning a Regional Center of Research Excellence in Non-Communicable Diseases in India," includes Drs. Kucuk Keynotes Research Day at Philadelphia College
Winship medical oncologist Omer Kucuk, MD gave the keynote address at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine's Georgia campus for its 8th Annual Research Day held May 15. Kucuk talk was titled, "Botanicals in Integrative Cancer Medicine and Health."
 
  
Winship Urology Specialists Present at National Meeting
Nearly a dozen Winship clinicians and trainees presented at the 113th annual meeting of the American Urologic Association May 18-21 in San Francisco. Among the presenters, Winship urologist Christopher Filson, MD participated in a debate on MRI as a biomarker in prostate cancer.
