Winship Names Two 2018 Winship 5K Endowed Professors at Annual Race

Winship Cancer Institute announced that Lawrence (Larry) Boise, PhD and Erwin Van Meir, PhD are the inaugural recipients of 2018 Winship 5K Endowed Professorships, two new endowed awards funded through a portion of the proceeds from the Winship Win the Fight 5K Run/Walk held on Oct. 13, 2018. Winship recognizes the following physicians at each Winship study site who have enrolled the most patients onto NCI National Clinical Trials Network (NCTN) studies during the last six months: Drs. Mehmet Bilen (Clifton Campus), Nabil Saba and Dong Shin (Emory University Hospital Midtown), Scott Edelman (Atlanta VAMC), Shannon Kahn and Robert Klafter (Emory Saint Joseph's Hospital).

Yu's Research Highlighted by CDMRP
Research by Winship member David Yu, MD, PhD, was recently highlighted on the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP) website. Yu received pilot grant funding from the U.S. Department of Defense Ovarian Cancer Research Program for his project, "Understanding and Exploiting SIRT2/BRCA1 Interplay for Ovarian Cancer Therapy."

Withycombe Earns Early Career Researcher Award
Winship nurse researcher Janice Withycombe, PhD, RN, MN, CCRP, has received a 2018 Early Career Researcher Award from the Association of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nurses. Her work focuses on symptom identification and management in children undergoing cancer treatment.

Winship and the French Embassy's Office for Science and Technology will co-host a free workshop focused on the latest developments in thoracic malignancy research on Oct. 18 in the Kauffman Auditorium.
