HHS Regional Director Visits Winship

Renee Ellmers, regional director of Region 4 of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, visited Winship on Oct. 17 to learn about initiatives to advance our mission to lessen the burden of cancer in the state of Georgia. Ellmers visited with Winship leaders Drs. Adam Marcus, Suresh Ramalingam, and Walter J. Curran, Jr., MD, and toured the labs.
 
 
 
     
 
 
Winship Hosts France-Atlanta Lung Cancer Workshop
Researchers and clinicians gathered at Winship on Oct. 18 for the France-Atlanta Lung Cancer Workshop, part of an annual series of events to foster collaboration between France and the southeastern U.S. in different fields. Suresh Ramalingam, MD (pictured), co-chaired the workshop with Walter J. Curran, MD, and Gilles Favre, MD.

Emory Names New Director of Cardio-oncology Program
Anant Mandawat, MD, has joined Winship and the Emory University Division of Cardiology as the new director of the cardio-oncology program, a joint effort dedicated to addressing the cardiovascular consequences of cancer and of cancer therapy and caring for the heart health of cancer survivors.

Winship Study Evaluates Inflammatory Biomarkers and Immunotherapy
New findings published Oct. 17 in the journal Cancer examine the association between inflammatory biomarkers and clinical outcomes of patients with advanced stage cancer who received immunotherapy. The Winship team includes senior author R. Donald Harvey, PharmD, and first author Mehmet Bilen, MD.

Crucial Conversations Workshop Set for Nov. 2
The Women in Winship committee will present "Crucial Conversations: Tools for Talking When Stakes Are High," on Nov. 2 from 11am to 2pm in the Kauffman Auditorium. The workshop will be led by Susan Margulies, PhD, Wallace H. Coulter Chair of Biomedical Engineering at Georgia Tech and Emory, and Nathan Spell, MD, associate dean, education and professional development.

Winship 5K Takes Fundraising to New Heights

The 8th annual Winship Win the Fight 5K Race/Walk has raised over $700,000 for cancer research at Winship so far, with donations being accepted through Nov. 30. The Gail Boyter Magness Foundation raised $12,500 for Winship glioblastoma multiforme research through its annual "Ales for Ashley" event on Aug. 18. Live Chat with Breast Cancer Specialists
Winship will host its next Facebook Live chat on Oct. 24 at 3:30pm. Winship breast imaging specialist Rebecca Seidel, MD, and Glenn Family Breast Center oncologist Jane Meisel, MD, will lead an interactive discussion about breast cancer screening and treatment options and take live questions from chat participants.
