ASTRO Meeting Highlights Winship Impact in Radiation Oncology

The American Society for Radiation Oncology's (ASTRO) 60th annual meeting was held Oct. 21-24 in San Antonio, Texas. Nearly two dozen faculty, staff, and trainees shared Winship research and clinical expertise during the meeting. Ashesh Jani, MD, MS, and Hui-Kuo Shu, MD, PhD, received the ASTRO Fellow (FASTRO) designation (left). Deborah Bruner, RN, PhD, FAAN (at podium), gave a plenary talk on outcomes from a NRG/RTOG clinical trial in prostate cancer; Walter J. Curran, Jr., MD (right), was honored with an Advisory Gold Medal Award from the Sino-American Network for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology.

Winship Oncologists Present at ESMO
The 2018 European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) Congress was held in Munich Oct. 19-23. Winship participants included Drs. Taofeek Owonikoko, Mehmet Bilen, and Suresh Ramalingam (pictured), whose presentation on thoracic malignancies was part of the "Best of Munich" congress highlights session.
 
  
Cells in "Little Brain" Have Distinctive Metabolic Needs
Winship researchers studying PTPMT1 have made important findings about the enzyme's role in the developing cerebellum relevant to cancer and a number of diseases. Cheng-Kui Qu, MD, PhD, is lead author of the study published in Science Advances.

Delman Honored by American College of Surgeons
Winship experts presented the latest research and clinical updates at the American College of Surgeons' 2018 Clinical Congress held Oct. 21-25 in Boston. During the meeting, Keith Delman, MD (pictured at podium), was inducted into the inaugural class of the College's Academy of Master Surgeon Educators.
 
  
Daly Honored with Emory Award of Distinction
Jennifer Daly, director of Winship development, was one of 12 employees selected as this year's winners of the Emory University Award of Distinction. Since 1985, the annual awards have recognized staff members who make significant contributions to the Emory community.
