Winship ranked among top 50 U.S. cancer programs

Winship is ranked in the top 50 in the United States and number one in Georgia for cancer care, according to U.S. News & World Report. The annual list, released on July 30, ranks cancer care at Emory University Hospital through Winship the 41st best in the country.

Gabram-Mendola receives inaugural academic chair

Sheryl Gabram-Mendola, MD, MBA has been named the Ada Lee Correll Chair in Surgery. Gabram-Mendola (right, with Correll) is surgeon-in-chief at Grady Memorial Hospital, director of the Winship high risk assessment program, and director of the breast surgical oncology fellowship.

Faculty and fellows participate in Vail workshop

Drs. Ibrahim Halil Sahin, Ashley Woods, Jolinta Lin, and Sanjay Chandrasekaran participated in the 2019 ASCO/AACR Methods in Clinical Cancer Research Workshop, an invitation-only program for outstanding junior investigators focused on clinical trial design, held July 27 - Aug. 2 in Vail, Colorado.

Hinds leads Women in Winship focus group

Pamela Hinds, PhD, RN, FAAN, director of nursing research and quality outcomes at Children's National Medical Center, led a discussion on leadership at the Women in Winship focus group on July 31. Early that morning, Hinds delivered a Winship Grand Rounds talk on how clinicians can help parents of seriously ill children.

Petit Institute Seed Grants awarded to teams

Three pairs of interdisciplinary researchers have been awarded 2019 Petit Institute Seed Grants, including Winship member Gabe Kwong, PhD and collaborator M.G. Finn, PhD. The funding will support their project, "Activity biosensors that implement Boolean logic as precision diagnostics for immunotherapy."

Haynes helps create roadmap for synthetic biology

Winship member Karmella Haynes, PhD is playing a key role in helping to chart a course for the future of research in engineering biology. Haynes served as a sub-group leader on the Engineering Biology Research Consortium's Roadmapping Working Group, which released its technical research roadmap on June 19.

Company raises $115K for Winship melanoma research

Carolina Auto Auction raised $115,118 for Winship melanoma research in honor of company owner Henry Stanley, a melanoma survivor who was treated at Winship. The funds were raised through recent events including a golf tournament and car auction.

Winship Volunteer Services hosted a fiesta-themed dinner and game night on July 23 for guests of the American Cancer Society's Winn-Dixie Hope Lodge, which provides free housing for patients and caregivers during cancer treatment.
