Record number of Winship patients enrolled on clinical trials in 2018

Congratulations to Winship investigators for enrolling 850 patients on therapeutic clinical trials in 2018! "We enrolled more patients than any previous year," says Bassel El-Rayes, MD, associate director of clinical research. "It's a significant increase." Last August, Winship launched the "1000 by 2020" initiative with the goal of enrolling at least 1000 patients on therapeutic trials during 2020.

NRG Oncology trial supports new practice standard in prostate cancer

An NRG Oncology clinical study led by Deborah Watkins Bruner, RN, PhD, FAAN found that a hypofractionated radiotherapy schedule, which delivers a higher total dose over a shorter period of time, is not worse than conventional radiotherapy in terms of side effects and general quality of life for patients with low-risk prostate cancer.

Luncheon honors Winship 5K team captains and sponsors

Winship Win the Fight 5K team captains and corporate sponsors came together with Winship leaders and staff for a thank you luncheon on Feb. 14. Teams were honored for helping to raise nearly $800,000 for cancer research at the 2018 event. The 9th annual Winship 5K will take place on Saturday, Oct. 5 on the Emory Quadrangle. Registration will open next month.

Saba chairs session at NASBS conference

Pretesh Patel presents to Decatur Rotary Club

Winship radiation oncologist Pretesh Patel, MD discussed proton therapy with the Decatur Rotary Club on Feb. 15. The Emory Proton Therapy Center, located near Emory University Midtown Hospital, is the first center of its kind in Georgia and one of only a few in the southeast to offer patients access to this type of radiation therapy.

The Winship Neuroendocrine Tumor Symposium will be held March 9 at Emory Saint Joseph's Hospital. The half-day event will cover treatment options, sequencing of therapy, side effects, and treatment implications.

Facebook Live Chat: Cardio-oncology

Winship will host a Facebook Live chat with Anant Mandawat, MD, director of cardio-oncology at Winship, on Feb. 20 at 3pm. The interactive discussion will focus on prevention and management of cardiovascular symptoms following cancer treatment.
