Winton and Hauenstein honored with Spirit of Winship awards

Winship hematologic oncologist Elliott (Lee) Winton, MD and volunteer David Hauenstein are the recipients of the 2019 Robert L. "Bobby" Rearden Spirit of Winship Award. The award, named for Winship patient advocate and External Advisory Board member Bobby Rearden, recognizes one faculty or staff member and one volunteer who exemplify Winship's culture of caring. Winship team awarded NCI R01 grant
Drs. Gregory Lesinski and Bassel El-Rayes are principal investigators of a new five-year, $1.7 million R01 grant from the National Cancer Institute. The project, "Targeting immune stroma interactions in pancreatic cancer," represents a highly translational collaboration between investigators in the clinic and lab that centers around a Winship immunotherapy clinical trial.
 
  
Targeting old bottleneck reveals new anticancer drug discovery strategy
Winship researchers led by Xingming Deng, MD, PhD have identified a way of targeting ribonucleotide reductase that may avoid the toxicity of previous approaches, informing focused drug discovery efforts. Their findings were published July 19 in Nature Communications.

Higgins receives NCI clinical investigator award
Kristin Higgins, MD has received a 2019 Cancer Clinical Investigator Team Leadership Award from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) in recognition of her extensive involvement in NCI-funded collaborative clinical trials and efforts to improve the lives of patients with cancer.

Winship is celebrating the milestone of having completed treatment for more than 100 patients at the Emory Proton Therapy Center since it opened in December 2018. As the only proton center in the state of Georgia, the Emory Proton Therapy Center makes this powerful and precise radiation therapy possible for people throughout Georgia and the Southeast.
