Winship head and neck cancer clinic opens in Midtown

The new 10,000-square foot head and neck cancer clinic on the 10th floor of the medical office tower at Emory University Hospital Midtown was designed based on the knowledge that patients do better when clinicians can interact and collaborate. The clinic brings together Winship's many doctors and support services specializing in head and neck cancer so patients can stay in one place and have multiple providers come to them during a single appointment. Macrophages show anti-tumoral effect in SHH medulloblastoma
Drs. Anna Kenney, Victor Maximov, and colleagues have found that tumor-associated macrophages impair tumor growth in the sonic hedgehog (SHH) subgroup of medulloblastoma, a type of pediatric brain tumor. The results were published June 5 in Nature Communications.

Van Meir lab awarded B*CURED grant in glioblastoma
Erwin Van Meir, PhD and postdoctoral fellow Bing Yu, PhD have been awarded a one-year, $50,000 grant from the B*CURED foundation for the project, "Targeting Integrin Alpha3 in Glioblastoma," which builds on work funded by a Winship Invest$ pilot grant to Van Meir.
 
 
 
     
 
 
Quave receives Heiser Mentor Award
Nominated by her students and mentees, Cassandra Quave, PhD received the 2019 Charles B. Heiser, Jr. Mentor Award from the Society for Economic Botany. The award honors outstanding educators who have substantially impacted the training and professional development of students.

Carthon discusses cancer prevention with Atlanta firefighters
Bradley Carthon, MD, PhD spoke with firefighters and executive staff of Atlanta Fire Rescue on June 13 about cancer prevention and early detection. Firefighters exhibit higher rates of certain types of cancer due to chemicals they are exposed to in the line of duty.
 
 
 

Georgia core facilities partners gather at SEASR conference

Michael Zwick, PhD led the Georgia Core Facilities Partnership meeting at the Southeastern Association of Shared Resources (SEASR) conference, held June 12-14 at the Emory Conference Center Hotel. The partnership provides investigators from Georgia research universities with easy access to core facilities at internal rates, maximizing the scientific and economic benefit of cutting-edge institutional resources.
