Aflac Cancer Center ranks among top 10 in the U.S.

The Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center of Children's Healthcare of Atlanta is ranked #8 in the nation for pediatric oncology on the 2019-2020 U.S. News & World Report's Best Children's Hospitals list. Directed by Winship Executive Committee member Douglas Graham, MD, PhD (pictured with patient), the Aflac Cancer Center is one of the highest volume pediatric oncology centers in the U.S. and is staffed by Winship and Emory physicians.

Newell elected President of Georgia Radiological Society
Winship radiologist Mimi Newell, MD, associate director of breast imaging at the Glenn Family Breast Center, has been named President of the Georgia Radiological Society. She is the first woman to hold this post.

Anti-inflammatory drug may stave off metastasis
Vikas Sukhatme, MD, ScD and colleagues have found that an anti-inflammatory drug called ketorolac, given before surgery, can promote long-term survival in animal models of cancer metastasis. The results were published June 17 in the Journal of Clinical Investigation.

Curran delivers plenary talk at Korean Cancer Association
Walter J. Curran, Jr., MD delivered a plenary lecture at the 45th Annual Meeting of the Korean Cancer Association and the 5th International Cancer Conference, June 20-21, in Seoul, South Korea. Curran discussed NRG Oncology and the contributions of Korean investigators to the group's clinical research efforts.

Winship hosts Big Data Academy students

Citizen Science HD's Big Data Academy kicked off on July 17. More than a dozen middle school girls from across Georgia are taking part in this free, two-week academy that focuses on using real data to understand the causes of cancer. Led by Drs. Adam Marcus, Theresa Gillespie, Carlos Moreno, and Jasmine Miller-Kleinhenz, Citizen Science HD is supported by an NIH SEPA grant, Winship, and Georgia Clinical & Translational Science Alliance.

Winship acquires new linear accelerator
A new linear accelerator was recently delivered to Emory University Hospital Midtown. The equipment, which will enhance Winship's capacity to serve patients in the community, uses high-energy radiotherapy to treat various cancers.
