New Blue Ridge analysis showcases Emory funding success

Research grants by Winship investigators and Emory faculty were key in achieving top rankings for National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding in 2018, according to data compiled by the Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research. Emory's competitive funding totals included top 10 rankings for the Rollins School of Public Health, Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing, and Departments of Microbiology, Pathology, Pediatrics, and Surgery.

Winship recognized in Governor's proclamation
Winship VP of Cancer Services Melissa Childress (left) was on hand to receive a proclamation from Georgia Governor Brian Kemp declaring March Colorectal Cancer Awareness month. The group included Georgia Colorectal Cancer roundtable steering committee members as well as cancer advocates and survivors.
 
  
Winship study uses nanoparticles in advanced melanoma
Jack Arbiser, MD, PhD, Thomas J. Lawley Professor of Dermatology, and colleagues from the Departments of Dermatology and Surgery, investigate delivering a novel agent for melanoma using nanoparticles. The results were published March 1 in Scientific Reports.

Horowitz and Meltzer named to new leadership roles
Drs. Ira Horowitz and Carolyn Meltzer have been appointed to new leadership roles in the Emory School of Medicine. Horowitz is the executive associate dean of faculty and clinical affairs. Meltzer is the executive associate dean of faculty academic advancement, leadership and inclusion.
 
  
Jansen selected for AACR Scholar-in-Training Award
Caroline (Carey) Jansen, an MD/PhD student in the Kissick lab, will receive an American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Scholar-in-Training Award for her abstract, "CD8 T-cell infiltration into renal tumors requires a supportive antigen presenting niche," at AACR's annual meeting in Atlanta.

Drew Moghanaki, MD, MPH is the new section chief in the Department of Radiation Oncology at the Atlanta VA Medical Center.

Lett honored for work in Honduras

Celia Lett, NP, a nurse practitioner in the Winship Ambulatory Infusion Center on the Clifton Campus, was honored with a scholarship in her name for establishing health care worker training and children's health care programs in Honduras. Predisan Health Ministries, a non-profit ministry group, recognized Lett in February during her latest trip to the Central American country. In the mid-1980s and early 1990s, Lett was a full-time missionary nurse in Belize and Honduras.

Golfers raise funds for Winship prostate cancer research
The 20th annual "Drive for a Cure" golf tournament at the Country Club of Roswell raised over $32,000 for prostate cancer research at Winship. Event chair Ed Hoppe and club members stopped by on Feb. 28 for a check presentation with Drs. Walter J. Curran, Jr. and Martin Sanda.
 
  
Facebook Live Chat: Neuroendocrine Tumors
Winship will host a Facebook Live chat on March 5 at 3pm with medical oncologist Walid Shaib, MD and nuclear medicine physician Erin Grady, MD. The discussion will cover neuroendocrine tumor risk factors, diagnosis, and treatment options, including clinical trials.
