Winship Invest$ names new pilot grant recipients

Eighteen Winship investigators will receive over $650,000 in funding for new cancer research projects through the Winship Invest$ peer-reviewed program. The selected proposals include eight prostate cancer research pilot grants funded in part by contributions from the Dunwoody Country Club Champions Golf Association and the club's John H. Kauffman Prostate Cancer Fundraiser.

Lonial highlighted in ASCO press cast
A recent study found lenalidomide significantly reduces the risk of smoldering multiple myeloma from progressing to cancer in moderate or high-risk patients. Lead author Sagar Lonial, MD will present the results at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting May 31 - June 4 in Chicago.

Radiation oncologists collaborate on teaching module for developing countries
Winship radiation oncologists and colleagues from Addis Abba University in Ethiopia have collaborated to develop an educational module for 3D treatment planning. Details of the pilot study were published May 14 in ASCO's Journal of Global Oncology.

New clinical trial to enhance post-prostatectomy outcomes
A new Winship clinical trial uses advanced molecular imaging to guide post-surgery radiotherapy in men with recurrent or persistent prostate cancer. The study, funded by a $3.4 million R01 grant from the National Institutes of Health, is led by Drs. Ashesh Jani (seated) and David Schuster.

Quave honored with Emory Williams Award for undergraduate teaching
Cassandra Quave, PhD is a 2019 Emory Williams Distinguished Undergraduate Teaching Award recipient. The award is presented annually at Commencement to exceptional faculty members in each of the four undergraduate schools.

Emory University's Woodruff Health Sciences Center and Office of the Provost have announced the recipients of the Synergy II/Nexus Awards. Two of the six funded projects represent collaborative research from Winship members Drs. Julie Gazmararian, Dayna Johnson, and Ilya Nemenman.

Landry receives DAISY Award for nursing excellence
On May 14, Lisa Landry, RN, BSN, OCN, an oncology nurse at the Winship ambulatory infusion center at Emory Johns Creek Hospital, was honored with a DAISY Award in recognition of her extraordinary clinical skill, leadership patient care, and compassion. Landry (center) was nominated by Winship nurse navigator Kristen Schappler, RN.

Saba keynotes Henry Ford Health System symposium
Nabil Saba, MD delivered a keynote talk at Henry Ford Health System's Multidisciplinary Head and Neck Cancer Symposium held in Detroit on May 18. Saba discussed new frontiers in strategic therapy.
 
  
Kucuk featured at Morehouse cancer seminar series
Omer Kucuk, MD presented "Integrative Oncology Research in Prostate Cancer" and spent the day meeting with faculty and students at Morehouse School of Medicine's Cancer Seminar Series on May 16.
 
 
 
     
 
 
Construction to begin on HSRB II
The new Health Sciences Research Building (HSRB)-II, funded by a gift made last year by the Woodruff Foundation, is scheduled to begin construction in December. The eight-floor building is slated to include computation and experimental research, Division of Animal Resources, Center for Systems Imaging, and shared core facilities.
