Winship receives competitive NCI grant to propel work in cancer cellular therapy

Winship is among a handful of cancer centers in the U.S. to receive a prestigious grant from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) that will help move new cancer cell therapies from the laboratory into clinical trials for cancer patients. The award will provide an additional $500,000 to supplement Winship's grant supporting its status as the state's only NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center.

ASTRO meeting to highlight Winship research
Over two dozen Winship researchers and clinicians will present at the 61st Annual Meeting of the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO). The meeting takes place Sept. 15-18 in Chicago and brings together radiation oncology experts from around the world.

Patients with cancer pain face barriers to medical marijuana
Vinita Singh, MD, Theresa Gillespie, PhD, MA, BSN, and colleagues surveyed patients who were registered for medical marijuana and reported concerns over access to cannabis in states with restrictive laws. The study was published in the Journal of Oncology Practice.

Sites of metastases relevant to outcomes in phase I immunotherapy trials
Winship investigators, led by Mehmet Asim Bilen, MD, examined the association of sites of metastases and outcomes in patients treated for advanced cancers. The results of the study in 90 patients, and implications for prognostic models and drug development, were published Aug. 29 in BMC Cancer.

Data supports early intervention for smoldering multiple myeloma
In an interview with the ASCO Post published Sept. 3, Winship Chief Medical Officer Sagar Lonial, MD talks about promising treatments to delay the progression of multiple myeloma from its precancerous smoldering stage and the significance of early intervention for patients meeting new criteria for high risk.
