Emory President Fenves tours Winship

Nease pledges $1 million gift for Winship breast cancer research
Brenda Nease, breast cancer survivor and member of the Winship Advisory Board, is making a $1 million pledge to support innovative breast cancer research at Winship. Expanding on previous gifts to Winship, Nease’s new pledge focuses on a research project exploring new pathways in breast cancer metastasis and on Winship’s portfolio of breast cancer clinical trials.

Winship Invest$ names pilot grant recipients

Ten Winship investigators will receive $600,000 in funding for new cancer research projects through the peer-reviewed Winship Invest$ program. This cycle's selected proposals span community outreach and engagement, gastrointestinal cancer, investigator-initiated clinical trials, and team science-based research.

Seasonal flu vaccinations don’t 'stick' long-term in bone marrow
A study published in Science provides insights into why the boost in immunity from seasonal flu vaccination lasts for months but not years. The research team, led by Rafi Ahmed, PhD, worked in collaboration with Edmund K. Waller, MD, PhD to obtain bone marrow samples for the study.

Porter receives grant for Consortium for Childhood Cancer Predisposition
Christopher Porter, MD has received a $400,000 grant from the St. Baldrick’s Foundation to lead the Consortium for Childhood Cancer Predisposition, which comprises seven institutions. Collaborators include Madhu Behera, PhD and the Winship Research Informatics Shared Resource.

Dreaden receives St. Baldrick's Foundation research grant
Erik Dreaden, PhD has received a research grant from the St. Baldrick's Foundation to advance therapeutics for childhood leukemia. The project aims to further improve the strength and durability of responses to a promising class of immunotherapy drugs.

Shared Resource Spotlight: Cancer Animal Models

Winship's 11 shared resources offer advanced technologies and services to support cancer researchers. The Cancer Animal Models Shared Resource specializes in mouse-focused animal model development. Service highlights include GEMM, xenograft, and PDX models; tumor induction and monitoring; optical fluorescent and bioluminescent imaging; drug delivery and tumor measurement; and a new state-of-the-art Small Animal Radiation Therapy (SmART+) platform.
