Adam Marcus, PhD has been appointed Winship's interim executive director. Marcus will assume the role from Walter J. Curran, Jr., MD, while Emory University conducts a national search for Winship’s next executive director.

Owonikoko elected to ASCO board of directors
Taofeek Owonikoko, MD, PhD, MSCR has been elected to the board of directors of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO). Owonikoko will begin his four-year term in June 2021, joining five other newly elected ASCO leaders.

Spirit of Winship Award recipients named

Winship has announced the recipients of the 2020 Robert L. "Bobby" Rearden Spirit of Winship Award, highlighting employees and volunteers for their exemplary service, teamwork, and commitment to caring for others. Caroline Peacock, LCSW, MDiv is the staff winner of the annual award and Mary Booth Thomas is the volunteer recipient.

Researchers identify new type of molecular glue
Xiulei Mo, PhD, graduate student Cong "Claire" Tang, and colleagues have identified what they call a "mutation-directed molecular glue" that corrects a defective protein-protein interaction. The compound can restore a regulatory circuit that, when defective, is responsible for acceleration of colorectal and pancreatic cancer. The results were published on Dec. 15 in Cell Chemical Biology.

YAP1 expression in small cell lung cancer defines a distinct subtype
Winship investigators examined the clinical and biological significance of four newly described subtypes of small cell lung cancer and found differences that could inform prognoses and treatment decisions, especially with regards to the benefit of immunotherapeutic agents. Their findings were published on Nov. 25 in the Journal of Thoracic Oncology.

Health economics experts participate in NCI conference
Drs. Joseph Lipscomb and David Howard participated in NCI's Future of Cancer Health Economics Research Conference, held virtually Dec. 2-3. Lipscomb and Howard served on and co-authored presentations by the Cancer Screening/Diagnosis Economics Research and Cancer Survivorship and Supportive Care Economics Research working groups, respectively.

Nooka named to Multiple Myeloma Research Consortium steering committee
Ajay Nooka, MD, MPH has been named to the steering committee of the Multiple Myeloma Research Consortium. The steering committee leads the consortium’s efforts to review, select, and prioritize the most promising new multiple myeloma treatments under investigation and supports the acceleration of these agents into the clinic.
